On the Hawaiian islands, the words “Ho’omalu Ola” translate to “Guardians of Health”. The aptly named health fair hosted by PhiDex Brothers is a biannual community event, whereas in the past it was known as the annual Miloli‘I Last Fishing Village Health Fair. Ho’omalu Ola expanded the PDC presence to the Pāhoa Farmers’ Market and the Pana’ewa community. Once the beaming sun peaked through, townsfolk visited the educational boards and the children’s silly-putty station drew in families. Our Brothers reached out to local chain pharmacies, and were able to offer free vaccinations at the health fair. This proved to be a conversation starter with some attendants; some were obstinate antivaxxers; others agreed to disagree, while others saw the opportunity to freely vaccinate their families. The health fair’s was a success and provided the community with approachable healthcare-professionals with inviting educational boards that sparked health awareness.
